Xinzhongshan Linear Park – A Landmark Public Space in Taipei

The Xinzhongshan Linear Park by nightTaipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) began the renovation of the green space between MRT Zhongshan Station and MRT Shuanglian Station in 2017. The project integrate with the city government’s city museum masterplan, while expanding green space by 14-percent and adding a pedestrian walkway.

As for the green pedestrian corridor connecting the two MRT stations, the framework was originally part of Taiwan Railway Administration’s railway system. TRTC overhauled the original track space by replacing them with greens. At the same time, it also incorporated the expectations of local community by adding facilities for kids while boosting the tidiness of the surrounding area.

According to TRTC, the renovation of Xinzhongshan goes hand-in-hand with the cultural atmosphere represented by the shops in the underground mall, as well as nearby landmarks such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and neighborhood business districts.

In addition, the redesigned linear park incorporates the theme of changing seasons through diversified plants in the area. It also employs urban design concepts when adding related structures, allowing the park to transform into a moonlight forest and create a bridge of stars in the night. Thanks to this consideration, the redesigned open space often attracts visitors during the weekends, with people watching performances, listening to music, or simply relaxing along the green corridor.

To make the green pedestrian walkway, the city government has plans to adopt minor redesign of park details, including the removal of border stones to allow easier access to the grass fields. There will also be new inclusive playground facilities for kids, as well as universal access design and expansion of green spaces and trees.
