“Taipei and the World in Dialogue” (2 pm, Jan. 3, 2016)

Last December (2015), many people in Taiwan received a “Line” message with a photo, which urged people to send their used shoes to Kenya. The tiny feet bit terribly by “chigoe fleas” in the photo had shaken lots of Taiwanese. People from all walks of life immediately donated their used shoes to the “step30”, which has raised a million pairs of shoes in a very short time and shipped them to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The cargo containers used for shipping shoes were left there as shelters for the local people. Ambassador Diego L. Chou, the Director General of the Department of NGO International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs was invited to attend the donation ceremony.
In recognition of their outstanding contribution to facilitating Taiwan’s international medical cooperation, David Y.L. Lin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, awarded the “Friend of Foreign Service Medal” on Dec. 29, 2015 to three medical institutions: Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation, Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps and Changhua Christian Hospital. In Taiwan, there are more than 2,500 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as Red Cross and Rotary International, which have close ties with international communities, and their contributions to the world are well known.
The radio program “Taipei and the World in Dialogue” will interview Ambassador Diego L. Chou, the Director General of the Department of NGO International Affairs, who will tell the warm stories created by NGOs in Taiwan. It will be broadcast on FM 93.1 at 2 pm on Jan. 3, 2016. Please tune in.
