Celebrating 2 Years of Labor Education Program at Local Community Colleges

A student’s work raising awareness on labor right issuesIn an effort to introduce labor rights education at the community level, the Department of Labor (DOL) joined hands with Taipei City’s community colleges to set up labor education programs back in 2019. Over the past 2 years, a total of 142 classes attracted 3,295 participants. Labor Commissioner Chen Hsin-yu remarked that the collaboration will continue this year.

Chen stressed that to raise labor rights awareness among the public, DOL piloted the Taipei City Community College Labor Education Implementation Project across 11 campuses in 2019. During the first year of implementation, the program attracted 2,000 people to sign up for 78 classes. Despite the impact of the pandemic in 2020, the program continued to be implemented at 7 community colleges, seeing 1,295 students attending 64 classes.

According to the commissioner, over the past two years, community colleges in Taipei applied for labor education funding from the agency to organize a series of labor issue-related seminars, board game hands-on sessions, guided tours, movie appreciation events, photography analysis sessions, and more.

Example of past classes include “Observing the Silhouettes of Labors” at Wenshan Community College, “Labor Rights Unabridged – Boardgame Workshop” at Neihu Community College, “Labor Poetries in Daily Life” at Daan Community College, “Silhouette of Workers through the Lens and Images” at Songshan Community College, and more.

Community colleges planning to organize labor issue-relate courses can apply for subsidies of up to NT$60,000 per school. For more information, please visit the Chinese website of DOL (https://bit.ly/2MDwT8b) or call the 1999 Citizens’ Hotline (ext. 3346).
