Number of Muslim-Friendly Hotels in Taipei City Has Increased by 155%

Representatives from Muslim-friendly hotels Taipei City has unveiled the first list of Muslim-friendly destinations in Taiwan ahead of other municipalities! In addition to obtaining Muslim-friendly accreditation for 6 destinations including the National Palace Museum, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Taipei 101, Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, Zhishan Cultural and Ecological Garden, and Discovery Center of Taipei, a total of 1,403 rooms across 28 hotels have also received international Muslim-friendly standard accreditation. The accreditation badges were presented today (October 21) by Taipei City Deputy Mayor Tsai Ping-kun, offering Muslim travelers in Taipei more accommodation choices.

Based on Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism (TPEDOIT)’s Interim Survey Report on Visitors Expenditure and Trends in Taipei in 2019, the main alluring factors for Muslim tourists are picturesque scenery, folk customs, culture, and convenient transport, etc. The most popular destinations among Muslim tourists are Ximending, Taipei 101 and Dadaocheng (in order of popularity) thanks to hygienic environments, language, and people’s friendliness. However, some tourists feel that the number of Muslim prayer rooms, Muslim-friendly destinations and hotels could be increased. In light of this, TPEDOIT has organized 2 Muslim-friendly Destination and Hotel Program briefings in July 2019 to solicit destinations and hotels that are willing to enhance service quality for Muslim tourists. Thereafter, through a site visit, facility improvement and personnel education and training, a total of 6 destinations and 28 hotels have obtained accreditation, and the Muslim-friendly accreditation badges were presented to them today.

Taipei City has the largest number of Muslim-friendly hotels in the country; in addition to the 18 accredited hotels, 28 new hotels received accreditation, in turn boosting the figure by 155%. To accommodate Muslim travelers, the hotels must provide facilities such as prayer blankets, Mecca marker, bidet toilet or bidet spray, and so on. At the same time, they must be able to serve Halal breakfast, and hotel staff should receive professional education and training in an effort to strengthen services for Muslim tourists. The 28 hotels are located in 8 districts throughout Taipei City including Beitou District, Wanhua District, and Zhongzheng District. Ranging from business hotels, hot spring hotels, and youth hostels, they provide Muslim tourists in Taiwan with more accommodation alternatives.

Attracting over 2 million visitors in 2019, the National Palace Museum and the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall have created prayer rooms and bidet spray facilities on their premises to support Muslim-friendly tourism and to accommodate more diverse traveling needs. Zhishan Cultural and Ecological Garden, on the other hand, has taken advantage of its park space to establish a Muslim prayer room to service Southeast Asian student and traveler clientele. Taipei Children’s Amusement Park and Discovery Center of Taipei has continued to optimize their Muslim-friendly facilities and services to attract more Muslim family travelers from Southeast Asia and the Middle East, so that they can explore the city museum inspired by the concept of new urban paradise and the city of Taipei. According to Taipei 101 Tourism Management BU COO Huang Chiung-hsuan, to accommodate the rising number of Muslim tourists coming to Taipei 101, bidet toilets have been established on the 3F of the Taipei 101 Mall along with a Muslim prayer room on the 5F (observatory ticketing floor). By the end of the year, bidet spray facilities will also be installed in the toilet of the City View 360 on the 89F.

Taipei City Deputy Mayor Tsai Ping-kun presented the Muslim-friendly restaurants and hotels with the accreditation badge today, while CrescentRating CEO Mr. Fazal and Taipei Representatives from various countries also attended the function to bear witness to Taipei City’s endeavors and determination in promoting Halal tourism. Deputy Mayor Tsai noted that according to the 2019 MasterCard-CrescentRating’s Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), Taiwan has emerged as the 3rd most attractive non-Muslim destination among Muslims in the world for the first time alongside the UK and Japan. Freedom, diversity, and openness are the most enchanting characteristics of Taipei City. He remarked that the city will build upon the foundation to provide more refined and attentive services so that the global community will be able to appreciate Taipei City’s commitment in creating a Muslim-friendly environment.
