The Mayor of Gold Coast, the sister city of Taipei, visited Taipei Mayor Ko

Tom Tate, the Mayor of Gold Coast, Australia, a sister city of Taipei, visited Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je with his wife and colleagues in Taipei City. In the meeting, the two parties exchanged opinions regarding education, disaster prevention, and medical collaboration. 

Ko welcomed Tate and his wife, the representative of the Australian Office in Taipei Mr. Cowan, and the Trade and Invest Queensland Trade Commissioner Mr. Hafenstein and invited Tate to participate in Mayor’s Summit of 2019 Smart City Summit and Expo held by Taipei City in March, 2019.  

Tate thanked Ko for his warm reception. This was his visit to Taipei after six years, and this time he noticed substantial growth and improvement of Taipei City; therefore, he expected to have more opportunities to visit Taipei in the future. In addition, Tate said that the two cities both face challenges of natural disasters such as typhoons and floods in terms of urban governance. Thus, he hoped that the two cities can share their experience of urban governance to cooperatively solve problems and achieve the goal of livable cities. Moreover, Tate expressed his intention to send personnel to Taipei to learn the design and operation of Taipei Emergency Operation Center and welcomed Taiwanese enterprises to establish businesses in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. In response to Tate, the Director-General of the Taipei City Fire Department Wu Chun-hung also expressed willingness to share experience related to the design of Taipei Emergency Operation Center and to assist Gold City in establishing an emergency operation center. Finally, Ko requested the Department of Economic Development to help facilitate the economic and trade exchanges between the two cities.
