On May 21, 2024, Taipei, Republic of China (Taiwan), and Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, officially established a sister city partnership. At the signing ceremony, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-An warmly welcomed Prime Minister Ralph E. Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This marked a historic moment in Taipei’s international relations and is the first sister city agreement signed since Mayor Chiang took office.
Mayor Chiang stated that Taipei, the capital of the Republic of China, and Kingstown, the capital of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, have now officially become sister cities. The two countries have enjoyed a strong friendship for 43 years, and both sides cherish this bond deeply. He expressed confidence that the relationship between the two nations and cities will grow stronger in the future.
Mayor Chiang also indicated that he was honored to have Prime Minister Gonsalves witness the signing of the sister city agreement between Taipei and Kingstown. He also extended his gratitude to Senator Shackell Bobb, Ambassador Andrea C. Bowman of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to Taiwan, and Ambassador Fan Huei-chun of Taiwan to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for their roles in ensuring the successful establishment of the sister city relationship.
Looking ahead, Mayor Chiang announced that Taipei and Kingstown will engage in close exchanges and cooperation in education, tourism, culture, travel, and commerce. As a gesture of this new educational cooperation, he also formally announced that Taipei will offer scholarships annually to invite friends from sister cities to learn Chinese in Taipei. Two scholarship spots have already been reserved for friends from Kingstown, marking the first educational cooperation project following the signing of the sister city agreement. Prime Minister Gonsalves reciprocated the goodwill by presenting Mayor Chiang with a painting from Saint Vincent and warmly inviting him and the Speaker of the Taipei City Council, Dai Si-chin, to visit Saint Vincent for tourism and cultural exchange.
