Celebrating the Opening of the World Masters Games, Taipei Mayor Wan-An Chiang Receives International City Delegates and Looks Ahead to New Opportunities for Global Urban Cooperation
To celebrate the grand opening of the World Masters Games 2025 Taipei & New Taipei City on May 17, 2025, Taipei Mayor Wan-An Chiang met on May 16 with the mayors of Australia’s Gold Coast, Penang Island in Malaysia, Phoenix in the United States, and the Northwest District of Singapore. These meetings involved discussions on urban sustainability, smart governance, tourism development, and cultural education, with the goal of strengthening city-level diplomatic relations. During his meeting with Tom Tate, Mayor of the Gold Coast , Mayor Chiang expressed his appreciation for Mayor Tate’s fourth delegation visit to Taiwan and for his personal participation in this year’s World Masters Games rugby competition, demonstrating his dedication to sports diplomacy and intercity collaboration. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation in areas such as education, smart cities, green energy, and youth exchange while also promoting a shared culture of urban sports. In his meeting with Rajendran P. Anthony, Mayor of City Council of Penang Island , Mayor Chiang highlighted that, since the establishment of a sister city relationship in 2011, the two cities have maintained strong exchange relations in areas such as culture and disaster prevention. In 2024, the Deputy Mayor of Penang Island visited Taipei City to participate in an international seminar on urban disaster prevention. The meeting further confirmed plans to expand cooperation in areas such as tourism promotion, age-friendly city policies, and community health initiatives. During his meeting with Phoenix Vice Mayor Ann O’Brien, Mayor Chiang reflected on the long-standing sister city relationship established in 1979 and acknowledged achievements in exchanges involving medical technology, education, and the cultural and creative industries. During this meeting, the two parties discussed industrial chain integration and two-way youth talent exchange, following Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s expansion of investment in the United States. They both agreed to explore further strategic cooperation projects in the future. During his meeting with Alex Yam, Mayor of the Northwest District of Singapore, Mayor Chiang mentioned that he had led a delegation to Singapore in 2023. This visit facilitated dialog and learning in areas such as residential planning, accessible transportation, and urban governance. In this last meeting, the two parties agreed to cooperate on topics such as health promotion and community care, with the goal of jointly advancing toward a happy and sustainable city. Mayor Chiang stated that all cities involved are either long-standing sister cities of Taipei or international partner cities with which Taipei maintains close relations. These meetings and dialogs have not only deepened bilateral city-to-city relations but also demonstrated the shared commitment of these cities to enhance public well-being through cooperation in sports, culture, and governance. During his speech, Mayor Chiang sincerely invited all cities to continue participating in international events hosted by Taipei City, with the goal of promoting a model of global urban exchange and cooperation.
