Introduction to United Cities and Local Government, UCLG

United Cities and Local Government (UCLG) is the only UN-recognized international city and local government organization, and Taipei City is part of this international group. UCLG was set up in 2004 in Paris with the goal of promoting collaboration between local governments, the right and its value. UCLG has eight sections: Asia-Pacific, Africa, Eurasia, Europe, Middle East, Latin America, North America and Metropolitan. Of these divisions, the United Cities and Local Government-Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) is the largest and comprises 7,000 different local governments, with a secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. Taipei City is part of this division.
Taipei City is a member of the UCLG ASPAC Council and Executive Bureau. This body holds an executive meeting twice a year and a major event every two years. Taipei City government has been actively participating in their international affairs and maintaining the position and right it has within this subdivision. It is hoped that these commitments will enable us to expand our international diplomatic relationships and benefit from inter-city relationships.
Advisory Officer and Executive Secretary for the International Affairs Advisory Council Ching-Yu Yao represented Taipei City Government at the 2016 UCLG ASPAC First Executive Bureau Meeting and Third South Asian Cities Summit from May 5th to 7th in New Delhi. This summit was co-hosted by the All India Institute of Local Self-Government and the New Delhi local government, and discussion focussed on the topic “Smart Cities—Aspirations and Challenges”. Professionals from related industries were invited to share their thoughts on smart city development to an audience consisting of more than a hundred New Delhi local government officials.
